I went to take a look at a local drone race and I came away believing that drone racing has a big future. It’s the perfect blend of RC and rapidly emerging technologies. We were indoors at the Agriplex in Cloverale, British Columbia and all the slots available for racers were full. I wasn’t sure whether many spectators would show up but by early afternoon there was a great crowd in the bleachers.

It was the first indoor event put on by the West Coast Drone Racing League and although there were a few teething problems, the event went off in a way that will have racers and spectators coming back for more. Lots of fun was had by racers and spectators alike. We were treated to some world class flying and the event catered to those at the top of the sport as well as those that are just beginning to transition their freestyle skills into racing.

Everyone took a break in the action to watch Colin Broughton put on a flight demo as he flew a 700 size heli INDOORS at the venue. Crazy! You can see the video of Colin’s flight here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIGr7…

Many thanks go to Tim Bakonyi for sending me DVR race footage from his goggles. Tim was kind enough to spend some time with me to bring me up to speed with what was going on. He is an awesome pilot and finished 2nd overall.

Another big thanks goes to Mark Teasdale for giving me permission to use several of his outstanding photos in the video (and thumbnail). You can check out some of his work here: https://www.facebook.com/mark.teasdal…

For me, the day was like being a kid in a candy shop. There was so much to look at and so much to learn. I brought my camera along “just in case” and hadn’t intended on doing any filming but I managed to shoot the random footage you see in this video. The video isn’t meant to cover the event like you would see on a sports show, it is just a taste of what you’ll see if you go to a drone race. I hope you like it.
